Thoughts, Words, Actions

My mouth is filled with your praise, and with your glory all day long.
Psalm 71:8
I think people have misunderstood Christ's teachings about our thoughts. He tells us that it's wrong to kill or to commit adultery, but that it's also wrong to hate somebody or to lust after somebody. We can drive ourselves crazy with guilt if we allow every single thought we have to condemn us to eternal damnation. If we go beneath the surface, though, I think the message is somewhat different.
The real point I think Jesus was making was that we shouldn't judge sinners harshly. They've done nothing we haven't thought about. This is not to say that we shouldn't strive to rid our minds of hateful or dehumanizing thoughts. What we think is shut up in our mind probably won't stay forever under lock and key. So may my wrong thinking remind me that I'm no better than any other sinner. And may the Christ who dwells within me reform my thoughts so that my words and actions are consistent with my beliefs.

What fills the heart comes out of the mouth.
 Matthew 12:34 (CEB)
Prayer after thinking about today's devotion:
Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.
 Psalm 19:14
