The Truth

Lead me in your truth, and teach me.

We now live in a truth-denying culture. When confronted with a truth with which they disagree, there are millions of professing Christians in this country who call the truth a lie. When shown an event that actually happened, they proclaim that it's "fake news," apparently thinking the more loudly they shout, the more false the truth will be shown to be. Not a day passes without further examples of this phenomenon, and it is not only endangering democracy, but it is endangering the very faith that so many profess. 

Whatever the truth is, a disciple of Christ can face it. Asking God to be led farther along the path of truth, the truth—whatever it is—can only teach us more truth. When Christ promised that the truth would set us free, he did not mean for us to accept only the truth that was convenient for us. He meant that we need to trust that the truth of God will lead us through gentleness and hostility, through thick and thin, and bring us to the other side. 

If Jesus could face the truth of the cross and the grave before rising to new life, then his followers cannot deny that which we find unpleasant in order to enforce a false truth on those we disagree with.

Prayer after thinking about today's devotion:

God of the future, you are coming in power to bring all nations under your rule. We confess that we have not expected your kingdom, for we live casual lives, ignoring your promised judgment. We accept lies as truth, exploit neighbors, abuse the earth, and refuse your justice and peace. In your mercy, forgive us. Grant us wisdom to welcome your way, and to seek things that will endure when Christ comes to judge the world.
