Ongoing Grace

Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul takes refuge.

Psalm 57:1
When we turn to God for forgiveness or for protection, our need is for grace. We have nothing to offer. We are but empty vessels to be filled by God. But grace isn't a thing, nor is it a one-off event. It is an ongoing relationship, and thus has at least two meanings. Here's what Andrew Murray said in Two Covenants (1898):

It is first the gracious disposition in God which moves him to love us freely without our merit, and to bestow all his blessings upon us. Then it also means that power through which this grace does its work in us. The redeeming work of Christ, and the righteousness he won for us; equally with the work of the Spirit in us, as the power of the new life, are spoken of as Grace. It includes all that Christ has done and still does, all he has and gives, all he is for us and in us... What the law demands, grace supplies.
From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.
 John 1:16
Prayer after thinking about today's devotion:
I turn to you for forgiveness, for protection, and for transformation, O Lord: Grant me your grace.
