Puritan pastor Thomas Manton (1620-1677) preached that "faith gives a kind of presence to things... it gives a being, a kind of existence, to things future and afar off, and sets them before the eyes of our mind, and gives us some sight of them, as if they were already come." If, then, Christ is the end—the object—of my faith, then am I not to live in the world as though Christ is present in it? He taught me how to see him in others; he taught me how to treat my neighbors, and even my so-called enemies. The very nature of my faith assures me that he is with me always even as it demands of me that I act like this is true.
If Christ is my witness in heaven, may I be his witness on earth.
