Down to Egypt

Alas for those who go down to Egypt for help and who rely on horses, who trust in chariots because they are many and in horsemen because they are very strong, but do not look to the Holy One of Israel or consult the Lord!

Isaiah 31:1
God loved Israel, took note of their suffering, delivered them from bondage in Egypt and gave them a land. This should have been enough for the future, but after a great deal of time had past and Israel was being threatened by another foreign power, they appealed not to God for protection, but to Egypt.
There might be many reasons for Israel's apparent forgetfulness, but what's most likely is that neither the leaders nor the people were familiar with the amazing accounts of God's steadfast love and their own miraculous deliverance.
These words in Isaiah aren't just there to tell us about ancient history. They also contain a lesson—a warning, even—for us. The more immersed we are in the word of God, the more familiar we are with God's mighty acts in the past, the less likely we are to forget what God has done and the less likely we are to turn for deliverance to that which is not God.

Therefore we must pay greater attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it.
 Hebrews 2:1
Prayer after thinking about today's devotion:
Forgive me, Lord, for turning this way and that for help, instead of turning to you.
