The Hope of the Scriptures

My words that I have put in your mouth, shall not depart out of your mouth, or out of the mouths of your children, or out of the mouths of your children’s children.
Isaiah 59:21
Scripture trains us. In the law, it tells us what to do and what not to do. In the psalms, it teaches us what is worthy of praise and even teaches us the language of praise. In the prophets it helps us see what's wrong, how to fix it, and where to place our hope. And in the gospels, it reveals the ultimate ground of our hope and shows us that, in Christ, our hope is never in vain.

Reading the Bible regularly keeps our mind focused on God and on the ways God is alive within us and in the world around us. As Charles Spurgeon said, "The God of Hope is revealed in scripture with the design of inspiring us with hope!" Through our dialogue with God's word, may the Holy Spirit fill us with hope, even in times of despair.

For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, so that by steadfastness and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope.
 Romans 15:4
Prayer after thinking about today's devotion:
Help me ground my hope in you, O God, and find my hope in your word.
