Christian Family

If you will only obey the Lord your God... blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out.
Deuteronomy 28:1, 6
A lot is said these days about Christian family. Churches want to reach out to families. Churches build annexes called family life centers (sometimes the church even refers to itself as a "Family Life Center"). The list is nearly endless; and, unfortunately, it reflects a misunderstanding of the gospel.

Jesus says much—as does the Apostle Paul—intended to strengthen families. But our Lord is much more explicit in stating that family can be an idol if we place it above service to God. Nowhere is this clearer than the day his mother and brothers came looking for him. "Who are my mother and brothers?" he asked. "The people I'm with right now, they're my family members, for whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother." (Matt. 12:50)

May my view of what family is be shaped by the words of Jesus. Not vice versa.
Prayer after thinking about today's devotion:
Help me to join with my faith family in doing your will, O Lord.

After your own thanksgivings & petitions, close with the Lord's Prayer.
