By and By

For thus says the Lord: Just as I have brought all this great disaster upon this people, so I will bring upon them all the good fortune that I now promise them.

Is God present in the bad things that happen to us. Because God is love, many people cannot harmonize a good God with negative events. I understand that to a degree. But to me, the only thing worse than believing that God is to be found in bad things is the thought that God is not to be found in them at all. I, too, have trouble making sense of my faith as I watch the ongoing crisis in Afghanistan, or the aftermath of yet another earthquake in Haïti. But my faith would make no sense to me at all if I remove God from the equation altogether.

I am sometimes satisfied with the answer the old spiritual gives: We'll understand it better by and by. In the here and now, there's a great deal we don't know. So there's danger in making statements that are beyond our ken. It is enough to know that we are God's children and that God loves us. What we will be in the age to come has not yet been revealed. But if we bear the image of the Crucified one now, then certainly we will rise with him in glory in the kindom.

Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is.
